Style ‘N Beauty Cafe
In Launch Lineup For New UBC-TV Station
By Nathan James
There are few out, black faces prominently appearing on mainstream television today, among them CNN”s Don Lemon and MSNBC’s Keith Boykin, but with next Saturday’s launch of the Urban Broadcasting Company (UBC-TV), celebrity stylist Delvon Johnson will join them, as a host of the new fashion series Style ‘N Beauty Cafe.
Written and produced in New York City, the show, starring Johnson and his co-host, makeover specialist Sylvia Christian, will showcase trendsetting fashion designers, “ambush” makeovers, on-location segments such as Fashion week, and the latest in clothing, shoes, accessories, and coiffure for men and women. The hour-long show is part of a diverse, “multicultural” programming lineup, according to UBC-TV CEO Peggy Dodson.
Speaking recently at the Rising Star Awards, Dodson outlined her vision for the network: “I want to bring fresh, new faces to television and raise the bar. We’re going to be bold and relevant.”
Johnson, 34, says his new program is the culmination of his career climb. “I think my new show, Style ‘N Beauty Cafe, is going to be life changing for me,” he reflects, “I never imagined, when I started writing my first book (Love Yourself First), the level of success that’s [now] coming my way. Blessings are coming from everywhere, and I’m just so grateful to Peggy Dodson for giving me this chance to go so far with the network.”
As an out man of color, Johnson is one of only a handful of openly gay personalities on the air today, outside of an LGBT television network. Johnson and Christian will appear, along with the stars of the other shows in UBC’s winter lineup, at the network’s launch December 8th at Centenary College in New Jersey, where the station will broadcast its first live ABA basketball game. Both hosts will interview celebrities such as NASCAR sensation Tia Norfleet, Kareem Rush, and Anthem at the game, as well as introducing their show.
