The 28th annual awards ceremony, which will be held at its new venue in the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel, recognizes outstanding depictions of the LGBTQ community in film, television, stage, print, and online media. GLAAD CEO Sarah Kate Ellis praised Messing, saying, “Debra Messing is a champion of the LGBTQ community and many marginalized groups today. Through laughter, warmth and pure heart both on and off-screen, she accelerates acceptance and inspires everyone to raise their own voices.

Messing will join other notable celebrity guests for the event, including Whoopi Goldberg, Don Lemon, Rami Malek, Janet Mock, Trevor Noah, Christian Slater, and Survivor contestant Zeke Smith. The ceremony will be hosted by TV personality Ross Mathews, who is returning for the fourth time.

Ellis comments, “In acknowledgement of today’s political climate, attendees will be encouraged to wear special blue “&” pins, in support of GLAAD’s Together Movement, which symbolizes “GLAAD’s work on intersectional issues including immigration, racial justice, women’s rights, and LGBTQ acceptance“.

The GLAAD Media Awards are a coast-to-coast affair. The Los Angeles ceremony was held at the Beverly Hilton on April 1. The New York City event is billed by the organization as its “biggest ever”.
