Raul Castro’s Daughter Says Dad Supports Gay Rights

During one of the activities of Cuba’s “Day Against Homophobia,” Mariela Castro said on Saturday that Raul Castro supports gay rights, including the legalization of same-sex marriages, reported the AFP.

“He has done a little advocacy, speaking also about the need to make progress around rights based on sexual orientation and gender identity,” said the daughter of Cuba’s current president.

“The Cuban president (…) has been talking about it, but he hasn’t done it publically. It’s certainly part of his tactics and strategy,” said the sexologist, recalling that Raul Castro “has spoken out on the issue several times,” including “in the Communist Party Congress, the parliament and other small meetings.”

Mariela Castro (who is the director of the National Center for Sex Education) has for several years promoted a draft Family Code, which has yet to be approved by the Cuban parliament.
